POLYCYCLIC AROMATIC HYDROCARBONS (PAHS) IN THE LEAVES OF PIPER GUINEENSE FROM TWO MARKETS WITHIN UMUAHIA METROPOLIS

چکیده

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were probed in the leaves of Piper guineense obtained from Orieugba and Isigate markets within Umuahia metropolis North Local Government Area Abia State. Prior to drying, milling extraction procedures, P. each these was divided into three portions. The first portion not washed (UW), second with ordinary tap water (WTW) while third about 0.17 mol dm-3 NaCl solution (WSS). Quantitation PAHs done using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) technique. Eighteen analyzed samples market gave a total content 30.71, 22.18 8.31 mg kg-1 for UW, WTW WSS, respectively. 18.27, 15.59 1.20 This investigation showed that level leaf two decreased when but more significantly salt solution. In addition, risk assessment ΣPAH4 (the sum benzo[a]pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, benzo[b]fluoranthene chrysene) vegetable sample indicated there no associated consumption samples. However, it is pertinent wash vegetables before proper rinsing as this would help reduce quantity them. Keywords: PAHs; guineense; GC/MS; Vegetables; Leaf

Biodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Petroleum Contaminated Soils

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a class of potentially hazardous chemicals of environmental and health concern. PAHs are one of the most prevalent groups of contaminants found in soil. Biodegradation of complex hydrocarbon usually requires the cooperation of more than single specie. In this research biotreatment of PAH (phenanthrene) was studied in a solid-phase reactor using indigenou...

Carcinogenic potential of soils contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Xiamen metropolis, China.

Xiamen is one of China's most rapidly developing metropolises. The objectives of the present study were: (1) to establish the levels and spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil across the Xiamen metropolis, (2) to evaluate the extent to which PAH concentrations were elevated in the high urbanization area (HUA) of the island and how these compared with those in th...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) traceability in old buffalos living in south west part of Iran

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of complex substances that are produced during incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. PAHs are known to be persistent pollutants which can remain in nature for years. In 1991 during the first Persian Gulf War south west part of Iran was contaminated heavily. This study was undertaken to see if the PAHs can be traceable in animal tissues many...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in livers of California sea otters.

Concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured in livers of 81 adult female sea otters collected along the California coast in 1992-2002. Concentrations of summation operatorPAHs in livers of sea otters were in the range of 588-17400ng/g lipid wt (mean: 3880ng/g, lipid wt). On a wet weight basis, the concentrations ranged from 17 to 1430ng/g (mean: 146ng/g). Overall,...

Seasonal variation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emissions in China.

A regression model based on the provincial energy consumption data was developed to calculate the monthly proportions of residential energy consumption compared to the total year volume. This model was also validated by comparing with some survey and statistical data. With this model, a PAHs emission inventory with seasonal variation was developed. The seasonal variations of different sources i...
